Panic Attack: How is it Related to Hormones?
from:
Panic attack is one of the most common disorders present today. Women in most cases are the one’s who most often suffers from panic atack when compared to men. Hormones may have something to do with panic attacks, but first we must determine what a panic disorder really is and then how it’s related to the hormones.
Panic attack is manifested by increased heart rate palpitations and chest pain. A patient with panic disorders may also experience chills, hot flushes, trembling, sweating, light headedness and dizziness. Sometimes, a patient may also feel nausea, vomiting and abdominal distress. In severe cases, patients may feel difficulty in breathing, choking, smothering and shortness of breath. Numbness and tingling sensations may also be felt. During a panic attack, a patient may experience the feeling of losing control or going crazy and in some cases they feel like dying. Derealization and personalization is sometimes noted.
An attack can last for a few minutes to hours at a time. Usually, the attack is triggered by some stressors, for example, a patient may develop agoraphobia where panic attack occurs in places they fear.
There are obviously many causes of panic attacks. Usually, panic attacks are triggered by stressor such as public places, feared object and unsecured feelings. Physical illness can also trigger a panic attack. For example, if a patient has undergone surgery, such as hysterectomy or surgically induced menopause, they can develop a panic disorder.
A patient who undergoes hormone replacement therapy can help treat menopause. However, it won’t do anything to relieve panic attacks. Many women who’ve undergone this same situation know that the effect of hormone replacement therapy doesn’t help in curing panic attack.
However, women with panic disorder often experience attack weeks before their menstrual period. Anxiety may develop which aggravates the Pre Menstrual Period. Pills and other Hormonal medications do not help in treating the panic attack. There are many studies about hormones connected to panic attacks but scientists have no definite conclusions.
Women with panic disorder who are taking estrogen regularly at a very low dose won’t treat her problem. Women usually have this bizarre idea that taking hormones such as estrogen can treat their panic disorder. This is the most common concern of all the women whenever they visit their psychiatrist for consultation. Many have misconceptions about the hormone supplement they’re taking.
However, visiting a psychiatrist, particularly an Anxiety Disorder Cognitive Behavioral Therapist can be a great help in treating the underlying panic disorder. CBT is also a very effective treatment for panic disorder that has been known all over the world because of its effective results. Some hospitals and psychiatric units offer this service for free.
If you want to know more about panic disorder, visit your psychiatrist and ask him or her about your concerns about your own panic disorder. They’re quite willing to answer all of your questions to help you learn more about this mental disorder. You can also read books and magazine to gain more knowledge. The Internet can also be a great help for you as there are websites that are related to panic disorder that explain the condition. Search engines are free, so you can obtain information about panic attacks anytime you want.
