All About Bipolar Manic Depression
Bipolar manic depression is a disorder that causes people to fall into deep states of sadness for extended periods of time. You might ask why is this a disorder when people usually feel depressed on occasion? Well, the difference is that with bipolar manic depression, this sadness isn’t accompanied by any particular reason, they just suddenly feel sad. If you ask them why, they'll usually say: "I don't know."
Such an occurrence does happen regularly, but with bipolar disorder, the depressions strike quite often, though they may not be ongoing. A person may feel depressed one day, for example, and feel better the next day. However, after another week has gone by, he feels depressed all over again. This is the nature of bipolar disorder, and this makes it a mental disease that can be very hazardous. People who find themselves regularly depressed have a greater chances of straining their existing relationships with a loved one, ruining their established careers, or, in extreme cases, committing suicide.
Bipolar manic depression can be cured, but not through any prescribed medicines since no medicinal solution exists for this disorder. What’s recommended is therapy sessions coupled with medications. Therapy can be one-on-one sessions with a psychologist, or in moderated group sessions with people suffering with the same condition. This may take some time, often years, as the patient will have to be taught some self-monitoring skills as well as some self-reinforcing tactics. These cannot be taught overnight.
So for the time being, people who are suffering from bipolar manic depression are asked to take some medication, usually in the form of antidepressants. These medicines are meant to cushion the effects of extreme depression whenever they strike. In most countries, antidepressants are highly regulated medicines because there’s a serious danger of abuse. People may use them without a proper prescription, and they'd just get dependent on the same. Anti-depressants are reserved for extreme cases, such as the deep depression experienced by bipolar disorder patients.
On a lighter note, people who are suffering from bipolar disorder are in good company. The likes of famous celebrities such as Jean-Claude Van Damme, Ben Stiller, Carrie Fisher, Linda Hamilton, Axl Rose and Sting are known bipolar disorder patients. Aside from the disorder, they're perfectly healthy, which tells us that the condition, though it means some rough times, won’t really hurt us in the long run. Its perils lie in what we do with ourselves in the midst of manic episodes.
