Dealing With Teen Bipolar Disorder

Have you ever experienced an extreme mood swing? Was this shift in your emotional state preceded and followed by an extreme feeling of either elation or depression? Are these shifts in your emotional state precipitated for no particular reason... they just seem to happen? Do your mood swings affect your level of activity? Do you find yourself hyperactive one moment, and totally out blasé the next?

If you answer “yes” to all of these questions, then chances are, you're a victim of bipolar disorder.
Teen Bipolar
Bipolar disorder is a mental condition that causes extreme mood swings for no apparent reason. This can be perilous, since extreme shifts in one's emotions can lead to ruined relationships, missed opportunities, stunted emotional growth and, in some cases, physical harm or even suicide. Teen bipolar disorder is even more dangerous because it deals with adolescents who are already experiencing some turbulent times caused by hormonal and societal changes.

Indeed, dealing with teen bipolar disorder can be challenging, but it can also be conquered. If you're a parent, a guardian, a family member or a friend of a teenager who’s suffering from bipolar disorder, you should assemble three important things to help him or her deal with their emotional trials. They are:

1. Commitment. Teen bipolar disorder is a tough to deal with. The illness is multiplied by the rebellious streak prevailing during the puberty years. Dealing with such a teenager will test your patience, but you must continue to strive to make him or her see the correct path.

2. Patience. Teen bipolar disorder is not really chronic, but it’s nonetheless constant. There’ll be times when the teenager will refuse to listen to reason. However, you should never give up. Even if you can count the times you failed to reach the him or her as failures, there’s victory on the horizon. All you have to do is to stay with him or her when he or she needs you the most, even if he or she doesn't realize this as yet.

3. Understanding. There are those who say that bipolar disorder is beyond being understood because it’s a disease characterized by unreasonable tendencies. Regardless, you should understand that the teenager is suffering from a "disorder." It may be easy to determine that he or she has control over his or her actions during these episodes, but the fact is, he or she doesn’t. So, always keep this in mind when dealing with a teenager suffering from bipolar disorder.
