Diagnosing Depression – What’s the
Next Step?
Depression is a mental illness that can cause several
problems with how you function in your every day life. If you
suspect you have depression, there are a number of ways to diagnose
it, as well as figure out how to prevent it from destroying your
life.
The first thing you should do if you think you
have depression is to see your doctor of a diagnosis, either
a.physician or a counselor. Through a careful examination,
they can decide if it is depression, or if you're being affected by
a different type of imbalance in your body. As a medical
practitioner, they are required to conduct an examination, interview
and take certain lab tests that will help to determine exactly what
is ailing you.
This
examination will record factors including the history of the
symptoms you have, how long they've lasted and how severe the
problems are. If you're using drugs or alcohol, it's important to
let your physician know. A part of the measurement in severity will
be whether you've had thoughts of suicide or death.
Another way in which your physician will decide if
you're depressed is in relation to your family history. Depression
is often considered a genetic disorder, therefore, if there's been
signs of depression in your family, then you're more likely to also
show signs of depression. Also, if these family members received
medication or help, this can also be helpful in determining the
right treatment for you.
At this point, if it's been found you are depressed,
there are several ways in which you can receive proper
treatment. Depending on the type of depression you have, you be
prescribed an anti-depressant medication that will help you reduce
your depressed state of mind and make it easier for you to function
every day. It will sometimes take a bit of time time to find
the right treatment in order to help find the right chemical
balance. Anti-depressant medications usually take three to four
weeks to become effective.
If you decide to take anti-depressant
medication, you should be aware of the side effects. By doing this,
you can plan accordingly so that you know when to begin taking the
medication.
Another step in treating your depression is to get
therapy from a counselor or psychotherapist. Some counselors focus
specifically on treating depression and are able to discover your
interior state of mind and help you change the mindset that is
giving your problems. Therapists are there to not only help you
change this mindset, but also to cousel you on different tools you
can use to help you function better. Counselors range from
holistic healers to following a more traditional role. You
should be able to easily find a someone who best suit your needs.
If you have a severe case of depression and can’t find
an anti-depressant that works, you may choose to take
electroconvulsive therapy, also known as ECT. This
process includes giving a muscle relaxant, and then an anesthesia in
order to take some of the pain out of the procedure. Electrodes are
then placed in different areas around the brain and sent to
specific places. This will cause a seizure in the brain which will
help the nerves to rebalance. If you decide to use ECT, you'll have
to do this three times a week until the depression you're
experiencing lessens significantly.
For those who are looking for a different type of
treatment for depre ssion, there are several herbal remedies that can also be
used. One of the most popular is St. John’s Wort, a
natural remedy that has received several studies and been found most
effective as an alternative to anti-depressant medications. This
type of herbal remedy, as well as others, are available for your
consideration, but these alternatives should also be recommended by
your physician after an examination.
No matter what type of depression you're dealing with,
it can cause severe problems in your daily life. Depression is a
genetic imbalance located in the nerves of your brain and so being
diagnosed with depression is the first step to recovery. After this,
there are several methods that you can use in order to begin
functioning at a different thought level. By treating your
depression, you'll find that you can once again enjoy your daily
life and get back on track to accomplishing your goals.
