Zoloft is a prescription medication that helps to correct a chemical imbalance in the brain, which may be contributing to the social anxiety. This drug comes in many different doses so your doctor will discuss what the correct dose will be for you if you choose to try Zoloft for social anxiety. Although Zoloft is very effective for social anxiety, do not expect instant relief overnight. It may take a week or two or up to eight weeks before you notice improvement. Do not give up and stop taking the medication if you are not improved after a week or two.

As with all medications, if you choose to take Zoloft for social anxiety, you can expect some side effects. Some of the more common side effects from Zoloft are nausea, sexual side effects, dry mouth, sleepiness, diarrhea and insomnia. Not everyone gets these exact side effects and some may get none, while others seem to get many of them. Your doctor may want you to participate in therapy or other treatment in addition to taking Zoloft for social anxiety as opposed to just taking the drug alone.
